     Nineteen years of teaching writing and community has taught me what Brenda Ueland discovered:   Most people really do want to put their thoughts down in writing, either for ourselves and/or for others. 

     For some reason, though (usually those nagging voices from our past telling us we're not good enough), we've stopped believing this truth: The words we write do matter, and we, by virtue of being human, deserve to delight ourselves with them.

     I understand the fears associated with writing. As a weekly columnist for 18 years, I still sit down, pen in hand, and wonder, "Will this be the day the words abandon me?" I also know, though, that in a caring and joyful environment, people can overcome those fears and connect with the thoughts and stories within them. Writing is a freeing leap of faith that allows us to become joyful and impassioned and sane(r) again!  Really!
